Abrasion

ASTM D3389 and ASTM D5963

Summary

Abrasion testing is a great predictive tool that is used to determine the wear characteristics of materials and potential impacts to overall performance in end application.

Test Details

ASTM D5963 utilizes a rotary drum abrader to evaluated materials that are subject to both abrasion and frictional wear when used in their intended applications by running the sample laterally across a rotating drum that is outfitted with an abrasive media. Weight loss can then be utilized for comparative analysis or run against a standard to determining the abrasion resistance index value. ASTM D3389 employs a rotary turntable to evenly expose materials to abrasive wheels as set number of cycles to evaluate weight loss and volume loss due to abrasive exposure as well as both depth of wear and a standardized wear index value.
