What is FTIR?
An important step towards evaluating options for end use applications or for competitive benchmarking of any particular compound is by understanding the base polymer (of polymer foundation) of a compound.
Cured rubber compounded products provide researchers with a view of the predicted life of the material. For example, elasticity and other key material properties can change during the vulcanization process and through polymer type identification, researchers can compare performance criteria before specifying the material for use.
The Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) is commonly used to determine the polymer type present in a compound. Other common methods are noted in ASTM D3677. ACE can recommend the appropriate testing technique needed based on the desired outcome.
