The test methods in this standard measure Mooney Viscosity, the shearing torque resisting rotation of a cylindrical metal disk (or rotor) embedded in rubber within a cylindrical cavity.
There are a few valuable takeaways that can be achieved through running ASTM D1646. Running a material at a few different test temperatures provides viscosity values. Coupled with the stress relaxation characteristics taken away from this test, the elastic and viscous response can be utilized to predict processing characteristics. Finally, the pre-vulcanization characteristics are measured to determine the scorch time associated with early stages of vulcanization.
ACE offers a full range of rubber and synthetic compound testing. If you are interested in a test method that is not shown, please contact us and we will do our best to accommodate your testing needs.
